Almost there!!

A great deal has occurred since our last instalment and we now seem to be hurtling towards our departure date! The local real estate agent organised our first home open last Saturday for fifteen minutes and as a result we had tenants signed up for twelve months by Monday morning! As mentioned in our last post we were expecting to have a stressful wait of 5 – 6 weeks given the slow Perth rental market.

Linda has finally been given a work finish date from the bank of the 12th of March and although sad to be leaving her work colleagues will be extremely glad to start her retirement and commence our adventure. Subsequently, we have booked our flights and leave Perth early on the 15th of March. We loved London during our one and only previous trip so have decided to book accommodation in Paddington for three nights. While in London we hope to catch the ferry down to Greenwich and organise a trip on the new Emirates cable car across the Thames to Docklands and back. We definitely want to visit Westminster Abby again and Linda is keen to do a day trip to the Warner Bros Harry Potter studios (I probably should admit to having some interest also!) We will catch the train up to Banbury and stay at Broughton farm for two nights which will allow us make the purchases required to make the van liveable.

Lewis from Elite motorhomes will introduce us to our new home and hopefully ensure we understand how to manage all of its requirements. I have recently discovered the ‘Motorhome365’ forum and requested some information relating to solar panels and camping clubs. In response I received 35 pieces of useful advice and over 350 views! It is reassuring that, given our very limited motorhome knowledge there are many like minded people genuinely willing to help.

Something we are having difficulty coming to terms with is the fact that when we leave Banbury we have no set destination or time frame! I imagine the weather will dictate our travels to a certain extent? Our very loose travel plan is to explore Oxfordshire and head towards the Cotswolds. Coincidently, my lovely cousin Joanna and her husband Paul from Harrogate will be in the Cotswold area at about the same time. We have only met them both once when they visited Perth last year and we hope to catch up at a pub somewhere for a meal? We will take our time heading down through Bath to the southern coast slowly making our way towards the ferry at Dover. While in Portsmouth we have organised to have the two 120w solar panels installed and visit the Mary Rose. We both greatly enjoy walking and I am sure we will find some great coastal trails along our route?

Less than four weeks to go πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

    • Hi Ric, yes it is a relief. They are a professional couple from England strangely enough. He is an accountant and she is a law clerk. Things are moving along really fast, my feet don’t touch the ground anymore. Have a good time on the coast this weekend. Talk soon xxxxx

    Hi Dave and Linda,
Great news about the house getting rented so soon.
    Enjoying reading about your adventure.
We will have to catch up in some time in July/August/September some were in Europe.
Don’t forget to visit Dublin and Ireland you can get the ferry from Holly Head in Wales to Dublin only 50 miles and not very expensive.

    • Hi Des

Would be great to catch up with both you and Marie in Europe! Have no idea where we will be – most likely Northern France or Southern Germany? Keep in touch and we can sort out details as we get closer? Was good to lease the house so quickly – perhaps we under priced it? Having said that they look like being reliable tenants and agreed to a twelve month lease 😊😊

  3. Hi David & Linda, enjoying reading your posts and I can imagine how excited, tinged with a few apprehensions, you both must be feeling. We are back in Seville now, can’t say we are looking forward to returning but needs must and all that. I look forward to reading more as your own ‘Big Adventure’ commences, although it has already started really πŸ˜„πŸ˜‰

    • Hi Eric and Sharon

I remember a few years ago looking forward to retirement with some trepidation – what to do with all that time?? Now that we are on the verge of retirement we both feel well and truly out of our comfort zones! I’m sure this is a positive thing as there is definately no risk of becoming bored given our travel plans. I have only just read your latest post and many of the towns you have visited in Spain look amazing – Puerto de Santa Maria is no exception! It seemed you both enjoyed your last camping ground management post and it will only be three months before you are back on the road againπŸ‘πŸ‘

      • When we return this time, it is an eight month contract πŸ˜ͺ However, we will then look for only a six month contract for the following season (2016). That means when finish this November we will get a 5 month break, work 6 months and get a 6 month break after that. After we have completed our third season we will then review our situation πŸ˜‰

      • Hi Eric and Sharon

Could be a lot worse, you could be doing the 9 – 5 slog 52 weeks a year like most of the population! At least you will continue to be involved with the motorhoming community and the CC have placed you in an excellent location by the sound. Won’t be long and you will both be back on the road once again living the dream πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

The four weeks will fly by.

So glad your house rental went well, we too were concerned about underpricing the rental but came to the conclusion that we would rather have reliable income from tenants who are content that they got a good deal and more likely to stay for the long term, than have to re-let every few months. Wrap up well for visiting London in March! Both Westminster Abbbey and St Paul’s were awe inspiring when we visited a few years ago.

I’m really happy that everything is falling into place for you and looking forward to the next instalment.

By the way does your van have a reversing camera or sensors? It helps enormously. Just take your time, be aware of overhanging obstructions – I scraped our roof on an overhanging sign while trying to concentrate on getting through a narrow gap – and be prepared to stop, get out and have a good look around. Hi David & Linda

Great news! It won’t be long now till you are on your travels. We are booked into the Lamb Inn in Burford on 27/28 March and are planning to stay at the Randolf in Oxford on the evening of 26 March. Paul and I know the area well and can recommend lots to see. I will email you directly. When are you planning to get up North as the girls and their families would love to meet you?
Incidentally, we are just about to have our driveway blocked paved ready for your van!!!!!!

Love Paul and Joanna (Harrogate, North Yorkshire) xx

    • Thanks for the email Joanna, looks like we will be in Banbury for ages if we visit all of Paul’s’ suggestions, including the pubs! I would suggest you don’t make the driveway too accommodating as you may find we will be hesitant to leave (aka National Lampoons vacation) πŸšŒπŸšŒπŸ˜„πŸ˜„. We too are looking forward to meeting the girls and your family but probably won’t make it as far as Harrogate until MOT time in March next year. Will send you an email once we arrive in the UK to arrange a catch up.
      Love
      Linda and David xxx

    Hi David & Linda

Paul likes a drink or two!!!! You have our phone numbers so you can either contact via phone or email when you arrive. I do hope we can meet up. We are planning a city break in Cannes around July/August to meet up with Harriet and family – they go camping for a few weeks during the school holidays. Are you planning to go there on your grand tour?

    • We are really hoping to catch up with you and Paul however not sure about the rest of the family at this stage as we haven’t really formulated an itinerary. Having said that, we don’t think we will get to Cannes until next winter. Will contact you upon our arrival in the UK. Only 25 more sleeps!
